Week 71

March 8, 2016

Changes! Digo..... Transfers!

Dear Everyone,
So we received changes! I`m staying here in Juan Lacaze and my companion is going to Rivera! My companion`s name is Hermana Diaz, I`ll meet her this Wednesday.
This week was amazing! We went to the temple, and nearly all of the recent converts went with us! It was an incredible experience, especially because Hermana Alba was able to receive her endowment and get sealed to her husband who died many years ago. Hermanas Short and Tate came to accompany everyone. Since mostly everyone was able to bring family names, I really gained a stronger testimony that in the temple we serve people, and not just names.
Also, this week, Oscar came to church for the first time! He`s progressing so much! He wants to be baptized but doesn`t feel prepared quite yet, I`ll keep you all updated on him.
This week I was reading in the Liahona from last month, and there was something that really stood out to me that I`d like to share with all of you...

The Book of Mormon teaches us how to live happy lives. I believe that the happiest time in the Book of Mormon was when Christ came to visit the Americas--and for many years afterwards this happiness continued as described by 4 Nephi 1:15-16
15 And it came to pass that there was no contention in the land, because of the love of God which did dwell in the hearts of the people.

16 And there were no envyings, nor strifes, nor tumults, nor whoredoms, nor lyings, nor murders, nor any manner of lasciviousness; and surely there could not be a happier people among all the people who had been created by the hand of God.

why were these people so happy? If we analyze this scripture we can see that the cause of their happiness was the lack of contention within the people. They worked together to obey the commandments of God and avoid temptation. They were the happiest people created by the hand of God because there was no contention. From this example we learn that contention is the opposite of happiness.
The Savior taught us that contention is not of God in 3 Nephi 11: 29 For verily, verily I say unto you, he that hath the spirit of contention is not of me, but is of the devil, who is the father of contention, and he stirreth up the hearts of men to contend with anger, one with another. I can testify of this doctrine from my personal experience--the happiest times in my life and mission have been when everything was well within my relationships with my companions and friends and family. So How can we cast out the tendency to contend from our hearts?
The cure to contention is to grow the love of God in our own hearts. It is an individual responsibility for everyone. For me as well. President Uchtdorf really broke down a few helpful steps to be able to achieve this. Often contention is arises due to impatience. He says “Impatience … is a symptom of selfishness. It is a trait of the self-absorbed. It arises from the all-too-prevalent condition called ‘center of the universe’ syndrome, which leads people to believe that the world revolves around them and that all others are just supporting cast in the grand theater of mortality in which only they have the starring role.”
I know that everyone one of you would like to live a happy life--who doesn`t? So the responsibility is yours; it depends on your efforts (don`t just wait for your mom, spouse, child, or friend to be the one to change). President Hinckley said,“cultivate the art of the soft answer. It will bless your homes, it will bless your lives." Strive to be peacemakers--and if you feel like it`s not in your nature to be peaceful, remember the enabling power of the Atonement. Through Christ we can do all things. I testify of this in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
